About the event
In our world of “fast fashion” and ever-growing textile waste, it’s crucial to slow down our consumption and assess our long-term relationship with our clothes. Join Wee Things owner and designer, Rachel Beaupre, and enjoy an afternoon of making old things new! In this beginner adult (or child age 12+) workshop, we will look at different methods for mending, including decorative embroidery and the centuries-old Japanese sewing technique called "sashiko". Traditionally used to securely quilt small fabric patches onto thread-bare clothing, sashiko translates to “little stabs” and consists of simple running stitches in beautiful geometric patterns. This is a great process for beginner menders!
During the workshop, we will practice different ways to conceal a stain or small hole with embroidery or applique, and also how to apply interior and exterior patches. You can bring in your own garment needing mending, or work on some swatches to take home. Blue jeans or other garments made of woven fabrics are ideal. Please let Rachel know if you plan to bring something, so that she can provide appropriate patch materials!
"Mending Blues" sashiko-inspired mending kits will be available during the workshop at a discounted price of $35.
